Camera Usage in Studio Photography: How Burst Shooting and Flash Kill the Shutter Faster

A Workshop Truth: Not All 100,000 Frames Are Created Equal

In the workshop I often see identical cameras with identical EXIF numbers — say, 80,000 frames — in completely different mechanical condition.

How does the shutter on a wedding or studio shooter look worn to its limits, while a nature photographer's shutter looks almost new at the same count? Let me break down the physics.

1. Continuous Burst (CH Mode) and Curtain Heating

When a sports or press photographer holds down the shutter in CH mode at 8–10 fps, the curtain cocking drivetrain runs at the absolute edge of its capability.

  • During extended bursts (40–50 frames at a time), friction between the curtain lamellae and their guide rails causes localized overheating of the metal and PTFE components.
  • The lubricant in the hinge joints heats up, thins out, and gets pushed out of the friction pair's working zones. Wear increases exponentially!

2. High-Speed Flash Sync (HSS / Auto FP)

In a studio environment at ultra-short shutter speeds with Auto FP (High-Speed Sync), the shutter never fully opens — instead, a narrow gap sweeps between the first and second curtains. The flash generator fires a burst of pulses across that slit.

The shock-vibration load on the curtain return springs at 1/4000–1/8000s is at its absolute maximum.
