Today these cameras sell privately for a fraction of their original price. But 90% of them have covered enormous distances. What should you look for?

1. Cosmetics Can Lie, EXIF Cannot

Resellers have learned to prepare these bodies immaculately: they glue on third-party rubber grip replacements, paint over worn spots, and polish the mount.

But the counter stored in the ShutterCount tag can't be faked with a new rubberized grip!

2. Evaluating D700 / D3s Mileage: What Counts as Normal?

• Under 100,000 frames: An extremely rare find — a genuine "time capsule." The shutter hasn't even reached the halfway point of its life. Buy without hesitation.
• 100,000 – 250,000 frames: Great working condition. The camera will comfortably serve another 3 to 5 years of active shooting.
• Over 400,000 frames: The body is approaching the end of its useful life. Only buy it if you factor in the cost of a shutter replacement from the start.
