Why the D7500 is dominating the used market in 2026

The Nikon D7500 is probably the most successful APS-C crop body Nikon made in the last decade. A 20 MP sensor, the autofocus system from the pro-grade D500, 4K video, a tilting screen, and a body weight under 700 grams. It's no longer sold as a new flagship, and the used market is flooded with them.

I personally buy and evaluate several D7500 bodies every month, so here's what every real buyer needs to know.

Rated lifespan vs. reality

Nikon officially rates the D7500 shutter at 150,000 actuations. In practice, from what I've observed:

• Casual users (family shots, holidays, pets) realistically get 200,000–220,000 actuations before any issues appear.
• Active videographers and sports shooters kill the shutter blades at around 130,000–160,000 — thanks to burst shooting and heat stress.

D7500 weak points sellers don't mention

1. Single memory card slot: Professionals hate the missing second SD slot. For a hobbyist it's fine — but a used body might have worked hard in reportage precisely because the owner "only needed one slot".
2. Plastic bayonet trim ring: The D7500 has a plastic ring around the metal mount (unlike the all-metal mount of its predecessor D7200). Look for cracks and play in this ring — they signal frequent lens swapping.
3. EN-EL15 battery contacts: Green oxidation on the gold contacts in the battery compartment is a bad sign — it means the battery was stored dead for extended periods.
4. Infrared sensitivity: The D7500 is slightly more sensitive to IR light than the D7200. Not critical, but good to know.

5-minute field checklist when meeting the seller

1. Ask for a RAW file (.NEF) in advance and check the shutter count on our service.
2. Point the camera at a white wall and shoot at 1/4000s — check for banding or gradient issues in the image.
3. Remove the lens, use the Mirror Lock-Up function, and inspect the shutter blades with a flashlight.
4. Check the bayonet ring for cracks and wobble.
5. Shoot a frame at f/22 on a light surface — inspect the sensor for spots or oil marks.
