Classified ads for used camera bodies frequently state: "Used strictly in a photo studio at 1/160s shutter speed with studio strobes." At our repair shop, we can verify this claim: studio camera bodies usually suffer much lower mechanical shutter wear per actuation!

Why does shooting with studio strobes exert less stress on the mechanical shutter mechanism?

1. Operating at X-Sync Speeds (1/160s – 1/250s)

In standard studio environments, shutter speeds rarely go faster than the native flash sync speed (typically 1/200s or 1/250s). At these speeds, the front shutter curtain opens completely before the rear curtain begins its travel.

  • The shutter curtains travel smoothly without the extreme kinetic impacts produced when operating at 1/8000s speeds.
  • The internal shutter braking dampener experiences less than half the mechanical strain!

2. High-Speed Sync (HSS / Auto FP) Exposure Strain

Conversely, taking studio flashes outdoors and using High-Speed Sync (HSS / Auto FP) at 1/4000s or 1/8000s requires the flash to emit rapid stroboscopic bursts while the shutter forms a narrow travelling slit. Operating in this mode pushes mechanical curtain velocity and spring stress back to maximum limits.
