When buying pre-owned camera equipment, sellers frequently confuse (or deliberately misrepresent) the purchase date with the actual manufacturing year. The claim "the camera is only 2 years old" may simply mean it sat in a warehouse for 5 years before being purchased 2 years ago.

By analyzing serial number structures and deep EXIF metadata, you can identify the exact month and year of factory assembly, as well as its intended regional market.

Where Is the Serial Number Located?

1. Physical Label on Bottom Plate: Printed on the serial plate on the bottom casing near the tripod mount.
2. Embedded Inside Internal EXIF Tags (Internal Serial Number): Unlike external sticker labels that can be replaced during body repair, the main motherboard EEPROM contains an unalterable internal serial number.

Serial Number Decoding by Brand

1. Nikon Cameras

Nikon uses 7-digit serial numbers. The first digit usually encodes the target market region:

• 2xxxxxx / 3xxxxxx: US and North American market.
• 4xxxxxx: European and International market.
• 5xxxxxx: Japanese Domestic Market (JDM).
• 6xxxxxx / 7xxxxxx: Asian-Pacific region.

2. Canon Cameras

On Canon DSLR and mirrorless bodies, manufacturing dates are encoded into 12-digit serial numbers. The 3rd and 4th digits indicate the month and year of assembly according to Canon revision tables.

InternalSerialNumber Tag and Fraud Prevention

Unscrupulous sellers occasionally take a damaged camera chassis and swap the bottom plate label with one from a pristine donor body.

However, MakerNote structures in Nikon (.NEF) and Canon (.CR2) files record the original internal processor serial number. If the external sticker serial number does not match the internal EXIF tag, you are looking at a mismatched "Frankenstein" assembly.
