1. Sensor Shield: What you see inside the bayonet throat of a Z8 or Z9 when no lens is attached is NOT a shutter, but a durable protective dust shield! It closes only when the camera body is powered OFF.
2. 1/32,000 sec Electronic Shutter: Thanks to ultra-fast Stacked CMOS sensor readout speeds, physical shutter curtains are entirely unnecessary. Mechanical shutter wear in the Z8/Z9 is literally zero!
3. What the EXIF Counter Measures: The ShutterCount tag in Nikon Z8/Z9 metadata records electronic sensor sampling actuations. It serves as a benchmark for total processor and sensor operating usage.

The Nostalgic Nikon Zf: Mechanical Curtain + Classic Styling

Unlike the Z8, the full-frame Nikon Zf incorporates a real mechanical focal-plane shutter alongside its retro styling. In the Zf, the EXPEED 7 engine tracks dual metrics:

• MechanicalShutterCount — Actual physical curtain actuations (rated for up to 200,000 shots).
• TotalShutterCount — Total combined captures, including silent electronic shutter mode.
