"The camera only has 5,000 frames on it" — the most common lie on the used market

In my experience, roughly a third of used Nikon bodies that come through my workshop were sold with inaccurate mileage info. Sometimes the seller is simply misinformed. But often — it's deliberate. Let me walk you through every trick I've seen, and how to spot each one.

Methods sellers use to hide real shutter count

1. Resetting the file numbering

The simplest and most common "trick." In the camera menu under file naming, the folder counter can be reset to zero. The images on the card start at 0001 again. An inexperienced buyer glances at the filename and thinks "practically new." But ShutterCount in MakerNote is completely independent of filenames — it keeps counting from its real number.

2. Formatting the memory card repeatedly

Similar to above. Every format resets ImageNumber to zero. But again — ShutterCount in the EEPROM is untouched. A file from a freshly formatted card with the number DSC_0001.JPG can still contain ShutterCount = 187,430.

3. Motherboard replacement

The most expensive and effective method. If a new motherboard is installed, the EEPROM has a blank counter — the camera genuinely shows zero. Detectable by: the serial number in EXIF no longer matches the one on the body. Nikon's service department records every board swap.

4. Hardware EEPROM programmer

The most technically demanding manipulation. A programmer is physically soldered onto the EEPROM chip and the ShutterCount value is overwritten directly. Detectable by: the date of the last photo doesn't match the claimed age of the camera, and the body wear doesn't match the low count.

What can't be faked

• Mechanical wear — a scratched mount, worn buttons, and soft shutter don't lie about the camera's history.
• Sensor contamination level — a "freshly preserved" camera with 5,000 shots shouldn't have heavy oil contamination on the sensor.
• The EXIF serial number — if it doesn't match the body engraving, walk away.
