In the workshop, photographers are often surprised when, during a shutter diagnosis, I ask: "What lenses did you mainly shoot with — a light 50mm f/1.8G prime, or a heavy 70-200mm f/2.8 VR zoom?"

3 Ways Optics Affect the Shutter Drive Assembly

  1. The Aperture Linkage Lever: On all Nikon F-mount lenses (except the E-series with electromagnetic aperture), the shutter and aperture lever are cocked by a single shared electric motor! With every frame, a spring-loaded pin in the mount bay snaps the lens aperture shut. On stiff older lenses, the load on this motor increases by up to 40%.
  2. Micro-deformation of the Magnesium Chassis from Heavy Optics: If you constantly carry a D750 with a 2-kilogram 70-200mm f/2.8 telephoto hanging from the camera strap rather than the lens foot, the weight gradually bends the front mount frame. This causes the shutter seat to sit slightly off-axis.
  3. Electromagnetic Aperture (E-type Lenses): Modern Nikkor E lenses (e.g., 200-500mm f/5.6E) take the mechanical load entirely off the shutter lever by closing the aperture using their own stepper motor.
