When you open a file's properties in Windows, you see the standard data: shutter speed, aperture, ISO, and lens model. But the most important piece of information — the shutter group actuation count — isn't there.

Why? Because Nikon's engineering team hid the counters in a binary block called the MakerNote (Manufacturer's Notes). Let's break down how this system works from the inside.

Tag 1: ShutterCount (also known as ImageCount)

In DSLR cameras (D90, D300s, D700, D750, D850), this tag counts every physical shutter blade cycle.

• Press the shutter — the electromagnet cocks, the blades run, the counter in EEPROM goes up by +1.
• If you shot in flash mode or bracketing, each individual frame adds one to the count.

Tag 2: MechanicalShutterCount (introduced with the Z-series mirrorless)

With the launch of the Nikon Z6, Z7, and Z50 mirrorless bodies the system got more complex. Mirrorless cameras have an electronic shutter (Silent Shutter) that doesn't wear out the mechanical blades.

Nikon's engineers introduced two separate fields:

1. MechanicalShutterCount — shows only physical actuations of the metal shutter assembly.
2. TotalShutterCount (or the combined ShutterCount) — all actuations, including millions of silent electronic frames.

Why does the difference matter?

Imagine: a seller on the used market is offering a Nikon Z6 II with 150,000 frames. At first glance the shutter sounds nearly dead. But we run the file through our service and see:

• Mechanical Shutter Count: 12,400
