Why do different websites show different shutter counts?

This one comes up regularly. Someone uploads a photo to one service — gets 78,432. Same file on another service — gets 76,000. On a third site — "EXIF not found." What's going on?

It all comes down to one technical detail: on Nikon cameras, the shutter count tag is not stored in the standard EXIF block — it's buried inside a proprietary block called MakerNote. Most simple EXIF viewers either don't read this block at all, or read it incorrectly and lose data in the process.

How different tools handle MakerNote

ExifTool (command line, free)

The outright champion for complete metadata reading. Reads MakerNote thoroughly, supports every Nikon, Canon, Sony, and Fujifilm model. But it's a tool for technical users: you need a command line and a system installation. Not practical for a buyer meeting a seller in a parking lot.

MyShutterCount, Camera Shutter Count (web services)

Popular Western websites. They work well with JPEG files from mainstream Nikon models. Issues start with RAW (.NEF) files from older or less-common models. They occasionally return a number from the standard imageNumber tag rather than MakerNote — which introduces error.

Online EXIF viewers (exif.tools, exifdata.com, etc.)

They show standard EXIF, but don't decode Nikon's MakerNote. They'll either return nothing for shutter count, or show the wrong number from a different field.

Why the numbers differ

Nikon cameras have several fields related to actuation count:

• ShutterCount — total mechanical shutter actuations (what we care about)
• ImageCount — total images (can differ after card formatting)
• ImageNumber — sequential file number on the card (resets when you format)

Services that confuse these fields produce different numbers. Sometimes the discrepancy is 2,000–5,000 shots — and that's exactly why.
